Rana, with the press about this being the year for mobile (a couple years in a row!) it's interesting to see the differences in how users experience mobile phones. The service providers in different countries operate with different business agreements and this influences how people use them. No matter what, I think market demand slowly changes things as much as possible. Companies will make different deals to get more business.

In France it's now possible to keep your phone number when you change providers. 2 year contracts were the norm a while back and I sort of appreciated that when I had 2 teenagers. It was easy to say they had to keep the same phone for 2 years :) Today you can also get shorter contracts, but they're usually more expensive and you can't get the best phones with the shorter deals.

I love the "English time"!

As a younger American raising a munchkin sized American- I see, understand and want to respond to all of your points. But it's nearly 4am, so I'll say quickly- the double plastic thing annoys the hell out of me, but I can see it's incarnation in the Tylenol poisoning many years ago. Seal your product. Oh, and double seal is better... Whatever... Not.

Very interesting. In Finland there is much co-operation among mobile phone operators though there is intense rivalry about customers. But now there is a national law that customers changing from one operator to another retain their mobile number. This really helps as you don't need to inform all your contacts about a number change. Operators have reacted by bringing in longer obligatory contracts for new connections. Some even bundle attractive phone models like the iPhone with two year compulsory contracts.
Recently, in Central America I noticed people using the concept of 'Hora Inglesa' or 'English time' meaning being on the dot rather than the local 'flexible time'.

Great points Niklas. I don't know how much I'd trust the information users publish... maybe I've lived in France too long, but I can easily imagine people giving false information. As a marketer I'd be very wary of using those stats. It would really depend on the audience, the market and the type of communication going on.
